Plot
In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-year-old taxi driver, steals Francisco Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. Kempton demands an unusual ransom: he would only return the painting if the government became more committed to supporting the elderly, for whom he has fought before.

THE DUKE: CONFESSING A THEFT TO DEFEND THE FAMILY
Directed by Roger Michell and scripted by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman, The Duke tells the story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year-old man who in 1961 'steals' Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London (after the gallery had paid a hefty fee to prevent the masterpiece from ending up in the United States). This was the first (and so far only) theft in the history of the British museum. Immediately afterwards, Kempton sent ransom demands claiming that he would only return the painting if the government invested more in the care of the elderly (he personally led a campaign for pensioners to be allowed to receive television for free). What happened in the days to come would become the stuff of legend over the years. Only fifty years later will an entirely different story come out from which it will emerge how Kempton had created a web of lies: he was just a good man who wanted to change the world in his own way and save his marriage to his beloved Dorothy.
